Have you ever needed to print a quick sign that needs to stay up for a long time, but is also easily portable? This is trickier than it may appear because there are so many ways to make signs. Semi-permanent signs need durability. A cheap plastic sign will be flimsy and blow away in the wind or could be printed with inks that run at the first sign of rain. Great for a yard sale or a short-term advertisement, but it doesn’t work well for long-term signage. And paper signs obviously won’t work out in the weather.
You could also get a large permanent plexiglass sign like the type you see in front of strip malls. But these can get expensive quickly. Those signs are designed to last for decades with no decay, so the costs are high. Also, they’re not portable and heavy. They can actually be quite dangerous to install. Plexiglass is sharp!
So what material can be used? Vinyl. The compromise solution is to print a vinyl banner. Vinyl is the perfect solution to create semi-permanent signage that’s portable, waterproof, UV-resistant, and easily printable. But the equipment to print vinyl banners isn’t found in most offices.
Don’t worry. PrintSage is ready to help you create the perfect vinyl banner for your advertising needs. With our printing technology, we can print a durable vinyl banner for your next event, ad campaign, grand opening, or any other use you can think of.
What is a vinyl banner?
A vinyl banner starts with a material very similar to those blue tarps you can find in the DIY stores. They’re often used for painting or covering up lawn equipment. It is a piece of tough woven polyester that is waterproof, UV-resistant, and can stand up to a stiff wind while remaining flexible.
This material is then coated in vinyl, a type of plastic that can accept printing and hides the woven texture. It is usually a form of polyvinyl chloride, the same material used in plastic plumbing pipes. This compound is mixed with other plasticizer compounds to make it soft enough to cover the polyester mesh. The polyester mesh is then laminated between two layers of vinyl, sometimes with a layer of black plastic between them for durability and to block light. Some shops use a dipping or coating process to spread liquid vinyl over the mesh. PrintSage uses lamination due to its speed.
Once the vinyl compound dries, the banner is ready to be fed through our special banner printer. The printer uses inks compatible with vinyl to create bright and colorful images that match your design perfectly. These inks are permanent. The will not run in the rain and the plastic will crack before the image ever faced.
Vinyl banners are usually sold by weight. The weight is how heavy the banner is per square yard. The heavier the banner, the longer it will last out in the sun. Our 10 oz. banner will work all indoor applications and some outdoor applications. The 12 oz. banner will work anywhere. Some print shops sell heavier banners, but they do increase in weight and stiffness the higher you go. Our banners maximize portability, foldability, and weight without compromising durability.
Vinyl banners can also be measured in mils (thickness) and denier (the density of the underlying weave). We use a standard denier suitable for vinyl printing that can stand up to standard weather conditions.
Caring for your printed vinyl banner
The lifespan of a banner will depend on how it is cared for. Like most plastic, vinyl becomes weak with UV-exposure. An indoor banner used for a yearly party could last decades if stored right, while an outdoor banner in full sun is estimated to last about a year before it needs replacing.
Strong winds can also weaken banners over time, so it’s best not to let them flap in the wind. Eventually, all vinyl banners will fall apart due to breakdown of the plastic. With care, an indoor banner can last around five years before noticeable cracking occurs. Storing your banner between uses in a dark place will extend its lifespan.
If your banner gets dusty or dirty (common with construction site banners), use gentle soap and warm water to wash it clean. Do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals that could interact with the plastic. You can also use a pressure washer on a low setting with no chemicals for most spills. We do not recommend using vinyl banners where paint can get splashed on it, as paint removers can damage the banner.
